Unappreciated in their time

I had a revelation the other day. Was having a discussion with a friend about some musician or artist from the middle ages and how they went unappreciated and were outcast in their time, but in retrospect are considered to be brilliant and revolutionary. I've heard this said about artists so many times it made me wonder, is it because these people are truly brilliant, or due to our contemporary arrogance. This idea that we're so much more enlightened than we used to be. Perhaps this attitude naturally leads us to praise the artists that were outcast from previous eras just for the sake of being progressive. Just a thought.

Chips or Pretzels?

I was getting my usual lunch at Cup a Joe the other day. A chicken salad sandwich on a bagel. After I decisively declared that I would really enjoy a #5, the girl taking my order titled her head, furrowed her brow, and in a low, hushed tone, very sincerely asked... "would you like chips or pretzels with that?" Until this moment I had no idea what a daunting decision this should really be.

A Day to Reflect....

On Martin Luther King Day I like to remember one of his lesser known speeches:
"and I believe that ALL men, should have off at least ONE monday in the month of January whether you are white, black, latino, asian, or pacific islander. If you shall work... then park in the parking decks FREE from the tyranny of meter maids and parking police! We shall overcome...."

Steve shoots a porno....

I just had a brilliant idea for a porno film.... the virgin Mary with any myriad of other biblical characters, in a manger on a bail of hay or something like that. And part of the fun speculating who could actually be the father of Jesus. I wonder if this has already been done. I would research that... but I'm kind of afraid to do the google search.

Desperate Housewives

This morning I heard a report on CNN headline news about how given current economic conditions there are a lot more marriages on the rocks (given that financial reasons are the number one cause of relationship problems). However, a growing number of these couples can't afford to move out, and thus are staying together, this according to the national court lawyers somethin' or other. To be honest... this story made me laugh out loud, and maybe that makes me a bad person. But if we can't find humor in our struggles than all we'd do is cry.

Workin' for Obama...?

So I filled out my job application today to work for the new Obama administration. As I was in the process of filling it out, I was getting the overwhelming sense that I might not get a call back on this one. It started when I saw the note that says some positions will require you to go through a congressional hearing, and public disclosure of your assets and other monetary gains. I don't think it will take them too long to go through all my assets. As I went on there was a question that asked, what is the largest budget you have had direct oversight on? The lowest option was 2 million. I checked off N/A.

Ridin Dirty

I dunno about anyone else, but I'm hoping that Obama holds way back on going negative. I was pretty sure I was voting for him a long time ago, and he's not going to lose me by going gonzo apeshit on McCain or Palin, but I'd kinda hoped he was better than that.

I know its hard to hold back when the hockey mom says you are "pal-in" around with terrorists, but we kind of expect that from the fundamentalists. Playing the fear card has been their Modus Operandi for too many years to count. We don't have to become them to beat them.

I'm also getting tired of the McCain is Bush shit. And fuck anyone who calls me naieve... you assholes should know better. McCain ain't Bush, and everybody knows it. Anyone who saw what happened to McCain in South Carolina in 2000 know that McCain isn't Bush. But you don't have to be Bush to be a machochistic irritable power hungry little bastard. I'm just saying... different monsters, different names.

I expected McCain to turn into the political monster he is now as soon as he won the primaries, and he certainly didn't let me down. But lets be honest, he was the one saying NO to torture when everyone else was avoiding looking anyone in the eyes.

To Tell You The Absolute Truth I think McCain/Palin would have a better chance going negative on Bush at this point. The 15% of Americans who still support the president sure as hell weren't leaning for McCain anyway.
